2014 02 18 PCO-BCO Meeting
The first half of the workshop will be spent working on PCO (more focused on phenotypes), the second half on BCO (more focused on biodiversity collections). The BCO workshop will focus on microbial datesets (which require PCO terminology to describe them) and should also be of interest to PCO participants. Participants will stay at a nearby hotel.
Funding is provided by the Phenotype RCN (specifically for work on the PCO), the Interoperable Information Infrastructure for Biodiversity Research (I3B) EAGER project (for both PCO and BCO), and logistical support and meeting space is being provided by the iPlant Collaborative.

Workshop Goals
PCO specific goals:
1. Produce a set of use cases specific to the PCO and ensure that existing PCO term definitions are adequate for those use case (e.g., migratory populations, metagenomic studies, crop breeding, phenotyping); develop a candidate list of new terms to meet the use cases.
2. Propose several methods for annotating data on population level phenotypes (based on the list of use cases, from 1), to be presented for further discussion at the Phenotype RCN annual meeting.
BCO/PCO shared goals:
1. Collect 3-5 real data sets (microbial sets preferred) and annotate them with BCO, PCO, and other ontology terms.
2. Create a triple store and run some test queries.
BCO specific goals:
1. Coordinate development with OBI: select appropriate terms from OBI and import those into BCO, create a list of suggested new terms and modifications to existing terms in OBI and IAO
2. Create a set of logical (cross-product, OWL-based) definitions for a key set of BCO terms, to use as patterns that can be applied to new terms. Test them against a small data set.
