Goal

The Environmental Layers group would like to have a face-to-face meeting to discuss climate data interpolation methods to try and data sources in detail.

Benoit will create primary global weather layers at 1 KM resolution using data from both satellites (MODUS since 2000) and ground-based weather stations for the last 50 years (daily if possible, weekly otherwise). Interpolation must be done between the satellite and ground-based data in order to use both together. No one has combined satellite and ground weather data before. From this primary global weather layer, Benoit will then create derived data layers such as max and min temperature and precipitation (far more informative than means). These layers and others Rob, Brian M and Walter Jetz are developing with funding recently received from NASA will then be used for various modeling studies such as the effect of climate on various biological organisms. Natalie has picked up the work to create a fused, clean global 1 KM elevation layer that can be used to create derived data layers such as slope, aspect, moisture index and moisture (river) flow.
