Business Purpose

Train breeders involved in the Genomes by Environment (GXE) subgroup of the Genomes to Fields (G2F) initiative on use of iPlant infrastructure for their data management and analysis needs

Benefits to iPlant

  • Brings quality, consistent trait data to our infrastructure for public reuse
  • Assists in development of metadata use cases for Data Commons effort
  • Outreach to community of users who are not yet familiar with the infrastructure
  • Provides clear use cases for “workflows” between the iPlant platforms (BISQUE, Data Store/Commons, DE, Atmosphere) and external platforms (IBP)

Goals of the Training (Dec 1-2)

The goals of this training session are as follows (per Nicole's conversation with Jack):

  • To better explain the different mechanisms for data management with the iPlant platform (iDROP, DE, icommands, Fuse mount)
  • Training on data synchronization between dropbox and iPlant Data Store
  • More in-depth training on DE interface for data management and metadata association
  • Training on search interface and discussion of future functionality with Data Commons
  • Walkthrough of "workflow" for data management you think this group might leverage
  • Demonstration of BISQUE functionality (if desired...and this might have to be a virtual thing)
  • Discussion of potential downstream workflows you envision folks needing for these datasets (so we can identify best platforms to support you)
  • Description of and/or review of metadata templates we need to provide for your group (Jeremy, Jack and I will be working on this near term...I shared the data in the G2F directory with Jeremy and Jack so we can begin to better understand the metadata needs)
  • Any additional Q&A people have. I'm going to assume that Jode (and maybe Darwin) will have questions neither Jeremy nor I can answer, but we will have the right folks on speed dial to make sure things get addressed.
