iPg2p Steering Committee Minutes
October 22, 2009; 2 to 3 pm CDT

Present: Chris Myers, Dan Kliebenstein, Doreen Ware, Jeff White, Matt Vaughn, Ruth Grene, Steve Goff, Steve Welch, Tom Brutnell, Karla Gendler

The meeting was convened at 2pm CDT and there was some general discussion to allow time for late arrivals to dial in.

Item 1: Review Action Items

  • All: Send Jeff White list of references/resources/topics for mutual education, including a sentence or two as to why the reference is good
    • references have been slow to come in but will post and encourage more
  • White: Compile list of references
  • Gendler: Circulate Doodle poll for first three weeks in January for project update meeting
  • Goff: Circulate RFP
    • Grene and Myers can't lead; Brutnell would have been more inclined to write 3-pager if wet lab funding included but perhaps could it be driven by the modeling or data integration groups?
    • Goff working on more description to send out
  • Brutnell: Contact Greigorich regarding wet lab experiments
    • Wet lab experiments are not in line with calls for proposal
  • Gendler: post Welch's presentation given at developers meeting

Item 2: Discuss Steves on the Lam Trip Report

Grene opened discussion by stating that she got a lot out of the visit and the document.  However, Ware cautined that the document was a bit misleading and that it perhaps oversimplified the problem.  The document is already out of date with regards to what has been produced by the working groups since this document was put together.  Ware is concerned as to who the audience of the document is.  It was agreed upon that the document is an internal document and should not be released.

Grene then asked if there was some way to make real the notion of pre-computing.  Ware said that it should be more than possible to do.  From the Visual Analytics perspective, it would be best if Chris Jordan and Nick Provart talked.

Grene asked what is mean by ontologies as is referenced in Data Integration point #2.  Ware answered saying that it is a controlled vocabulary assocatied with datasets.

A discussion then ensued about the purpose of this document.  This document is just a record, made to alert us of issues and concerns and make everyone aware of them.  Vaughn suggested that this could be a living document.  Myers added that the report highlights areas of interconnection between the groups and makes sure we don't reinvent the wheel when it comes to viz tools and modeling tools.  Myers stated the document is too narrative in places if it is a document to work off.  Is it a blue print to work forward?

Item 3: Identify Action Items

  • Welch to make changes and post to site

Next meeting time: Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 1pm CDT

Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 3pm CDT
