• Adam reported on attempts at a Google Maps approach to the large tree viewer. Short answer: this doesn't appear to be working. Issues include:

  • Hard to scale in both directions when zooming; results in narrow tree that only expands along y-axis

  • The discrete nature of the zoom (based on tiles at different resolutions) means that the interaction is choppy

  • Takes about 8 hours on TACC machines to render the approximately 1,000,000 images for the NCBI tree

• Kris has been working on improving performance of the GWT implementation, and this seems like a more promising route
